I do think that Wharton has a special role to play — We should help to create social value.
Thomas Robertson,
Dean, The Wharton School

The Wharton School and the University of Pennsylvania have been engaging in social impact many years. At her inaugural address in October 2004, Penn President Amy Gutmann introduced the Penn Compact, which is her vision for advancing the University of Pennsylvania "From Excellence to Eminence" in all of our core endeavors — teaching, research, and service. The Compact’s driving principles are increasing access, integrating knowledge, and engaging locally and globally. At Wharton Executive Education, we strive to embrace these concepts in all of the work that we do.

In addition, the arrival of Dean Tom Robertson has brought a broader global and social focus to Wharton. The school is continuing to focus research, teaching programs, and practical application projects on delivering economic and social value to communities and nations in need. As a testament to our commitment to social impact, Executive Education has created a special team dedicated to our outreach in the non-profit, economic development and foundation community.

In the spirit of the Penn Compact and the dean’s vision, we are constantly seeking opportunities to look outside of Executive Education and leverage the multitude of activities which add social value and are already occurring throughout the university. Wharton Executive Education programs serve as a “portal” to our clients, bringing together knowledge and expertise from many centers and organizations across Penn, including:

  • Masters Program in Nonprofit/NGO Leadership (School of Social Policy and Practice)
  • Certificate in Nonprofit Administration (Fels Institute of Government)
  • Wharton Non-Profit Board Leadership Program
  • The Center for High Impact Philanthropy
  • Wharton Field Application Project (FAP)
  • Wharton Social Impact Club
  • Netter Center for Community Partnerships at Penn
